All
of the blocks will finish at 16 inches square, and have the same four
patch in the corners.
The four patches are made with 2½ inch squares. Choose colors that have a lot of contrast, a dark with a light. If you made all the four-patches with us at the beginning of the series, you have a head start! The instructions below do NOT include fabric for cutting the corner four patches. If you're just joining us, this is a link to the introduction page. |

This block is made of squares and half square triangles. I used blue squares to make the sew and flip corners on the large yellow squares. Here's a cutting diagram: |

Make all the half square triangles first. You'll need eight white-to-orange half square triangles, and eight blue-to-orange half square triangles. |

Next, add the eight 2½ blue sew and flip squares to your four large 4½ yellow edge squares. Leave one yellow square plain, for the center of your block. Sew the orange-to-white half square triangles together like the diagram on the left, then sew them to the opposite side of the yellow squares to make the four edge units. Sew the blue-to-orange half square triangles to a white square. Attach a small yellow square, like the diagram on the left. Attach these strips to your 4-patch corners to make your four corner units. Lay out the units like the diagram on the bottom left. Sew together and you're done! Press. The block should now measure 16½ inches square. |

There won't be a new block for November or December, we're taking a break for our retreat and for the holiday season. If you're running a little behind on the series, this gives you a chance to catch up! If you've been making all the blocks each month, you should have nine blocks completed. Here's where we are (but in your own colors, of course!) |

This is the way *I* plan to lay out my quilt, with nine-patches in the sashing to match the four-patches in the block corners. Notice that I also plan to leave off one of the four-patches in each of my corner blocks. If you'd like to do the same thing, this October block is where you need to start leaving one corner white. If you want a smaller quilt, it'd also look good with 2½ sashing and one square instead of the nine-patch. |
