Sweet Sixteen Series—Block Five

All of the blocks will finish at 16 inches square, and have the same four patch in the corners.

The four patches are made with 2½ inch squares. Choose colors that have a lot of contrast, a dark with a light. If you made all the two-patches with us at the beginning of the series, you have a head start!

Here's the link to the introduction page.

This block's going to have paper pieced segments. for that inside 'sun' design. You need to print just one copy of the two pages provided.

Remember, make sure before you print, page scaling should be set to

None

so your paper pieces print at the exact size you'll need them for this block.

I paper pieced the triangles first, putting the dark orange triangle down, and attaching the yellow or gold triangles to that.

Next, I added the blue fabric, then sewed these two triangles together to make a square. Last, I sewed the four squares together, and the middle of the block was finished.

Now you need eight half-square triangles for the edges of the block. Cut four 5 inch squares of each color, (where I used turquoise and white) cut them on the diagonal once, then stitch together to make your eight half-square triangles.

Or you can draw a line diagonally down the middle of your light squares, pair them with a darker square, then stitch ¼ away from the line, like the picture on the left. Cut on the solid line.

Then press them flat and trim so they're exactly 4½ square, the same size as your four-patch corners.

Lay out the components of the block like they should go.

I stitched the half-square triangles together first, added them to the top and bottom of the block, then added the four-patches to the side half-square triangles, then attached the sides.

Remove the paper and press, you're done!

The block should now measure 16½ inches square.
