Block of the Month

July 2006

Presidential Pumpkin Pi

Every year, we make a collection of blocks for the outgoing president. Charla has chosen a pumpkin! Instructions will be available at guild meetings as well as in the newsletter.

I've also drawn the block up in EQ5, so if anyone with EQ5 wants the file, just e-mail Jane.

The block will finish at 9½ x 12½ before connecting it to other blocks.

Cut the pieces as described on the right.

1. Mark a diagonal line on your 2 inch squares. Place each square, right sides together on each corner of the orange block. Stitch on each marked line and fold the inside corner back to make 'rounded' edges on your pumpkin.

2. Trim the excess triangles off your pumpkin corners, and press. Add the side strips. Press.

3. Sew your green stem piece between your two short background rectangles. Attach it to the top of the pumpkin block. Press.

4. Add the long 9½ x 1½ strips to the top and bottom. Press.

5. Tie an overhand knot in your long green piece. Tack onto the bottom of the stem with a few hand stitches for a bow.

Since I had this in EQ to do the graphics for the web page, I decided to show you what a wall hanging might look like with 6 of these blocks and a triangle border. Of course, we know Charla will get a LOT more than six blocks!
