When the December holidays are over, I start thinking ahead to Valentine's Day! Here's an easy 16 patch design for us to do in reds and white. Cutting instructions from EQ are above, and as always, I'll probably cut that top square at 4 inches instead, and trim the square to 3½ after the two triangles are sewn together.

Pick a medium red and dark red fabric to make your heart, and let's use white on white for the background.

Please use 100 % cotton quilting weight fabrics for the block.
Especially since we're using reds, pre-wash the fabrics before cutting the quilt block squares. Do not use fabrics that bleed or run.
Stitch all seams ¼".
Press seams toward the dark fabric.

The block size will be 12 inches square (12½ with seam allowances).

Here's a possible layout for our heart blocks. I debated on letting you choose pinks and purples as well as red for the heart fabrics, but that would have made a very scrappy quilt.

Let me know at the guild meeting if you would have preferred a scrappier option ... OR ... if the more controlled scrappy that we're doing means you might actually make something with the blocks.
