Sweet Sixteen Series—Block Two

Here's Block Two!

All of the blocks will will finish at 16 inches square, and have the same four patch in the corners, allowing us to tie the sampler blocks together with visual diagonal lines.

The four patches are made with 2½ inch squares. Choose colors that have a lot of contrast, a dark with a light. If you made all the two-patches with us at the beginning of the series, your block has a head start! Here's the link to possible quilt layouts you can make with the blocks in this series.

Sew the squares together to make the 4-patch in the center first, where I have blue and yellow.

It will be exactly the same size as the 4-patches you made for the corners.

Second, sew the 8 little green triangles to the pink triangles, making four small flying-geese rectangles, and sew the 8 lavender triangles to the white background triangles, making four large flying geese rectangles.

Press them and lay the parts out like I did. Does your block look the same?

Sew the pink squares on either side of two of your little flying geese units, then sew the other two flying geese to your center two patch.

Last, attach the three units together, making the center star for the block.

Your center star should measure 8½ inches square.

Finally, add the corner 4-patches to two of the lavender and white flying geese units, and sew the other two to the right and left sides of the center block.

Finish the block by sewing the top and bottom rows to the middle row.

And here it is all finished! The block should now measure 16½ inches square.

What will YOUR block look like?
