April 2008

Let's use some half square triangles, like we just made and swapped in March, along with 4 squares, to make this Diamond in Diamond block.

You'll need 12 half square triangles, white or white-on-white matched with a tone on tone, solid, marble, or small print. I'm sticking with the same colors as last time so people that did the swap can use some of those squares.

Measure and trim them to make sure they are 3½ inches square. The ones I brought home from the swap were a variety of sizes. That happens when you have several quilters using different methods.

If you start with a 4 inch square to make your half square triangles, then you WILL have to trim them a tad. They'll all be around an eighth of an inch too big. You may think it's being persnickety to trim that sliver off, but by the time you add all the slivers for that top row of four blocks, sliver + sliver + sliver + sliver = half an inch. That makes the top row not fit with the second row... which has only two slivers extra. Make sense?

You will also need four 3½ inch squares for the center of the block.

Please use 100 % cotton quilting weight fabrics for the block.
Since we're going scrappy with white, pre-wash the fabrics before cutting the quilt block squares.
Do not use fabrics that bleed or run.
Stitch all seams ¼".
Press seams toward the dark fabric.

The block size will be 12 inches square (12½ with seam allowances). Below is a possible layout for a Diamond in Diamond quilt. Don't you hope you win them all in the drawing? I like quilts that give you the look of a diagonal without having to fuss with putting the blocks on point and cutting setting triangles.
